ICLP LAUNCHED DIPLOMA IN COMMERCIAL ARBITRATION
The focus of the Diploma in Commercial Arbitration is on the practice of arbit r ation in terms of the Arbitration Act. No. 11 of 1995 which is modeled on a universally accepted arbitration procedure. International Commercial Arbitration pri n ciples wi l l also be covered as part of the course. The Diploma aims to promote a wider knowledge of the l aw & practice of arbitration by providing the knowledge required to enable an Arbitrator to conduct arbitration proceedings & Counsel and other Advisors who appear before them to conduct proceeding in accordance with Sri Lankan Law and according to international practice. The subjects covered will also provide those qualif i ed as experts in their own professions or trade & who are consulted and called upon to participate in arbitrations or to advice upon matters relating to arbitration with valuable background knowledge. The syllabus is designed to provide candidates with a detailed knowledge of both Sri Lankan law & procedure relating to arbitrations. The topics covered by the Diploma will be of interest and importance to all professionals coming into contact with arbitration. Candidates will be expected to have either an academic or professional qualif i cation in law or a qualif i cation or experience in a professional practice such as accountancy, architecture, engin e ering, banking, information technology, etc. where arbitration is frequently encountered. The Diploma is aimed at practicing lawyers, in-house lawyers, academics in law, members of the Judiciary, engineers, bankers, accountants, architects, IT experts, & executives / managers in the corporate sector/government sector who have similar qualif i cations & who are involved in arbitrations. The Institute has successfully completed the Third Diploma course too. The next intake will be in September / October 2008.
